FINDING BALANCE
When Everyone Needs Your Attention, It's Easy to Forget Yourself
A single miniature can spark curiosity and become part of a much larger story. This reflection, shared with permission, comes from a busy working mother who discovered new insight into balancing responsibilities, caring for her family, and making space for herself.

When I first looked through the shelves of miniatures, I had no idea what I was going to create. I simply began choosing pieces that caught my attention. I wasn't trying to tell a story. I was simply choosing what felt right. It wasn't until I stepped back that I realized a story had quietly taken shape.
Looking at my completed tray, I realized just how much of my mental space was taken up by work, parenting, and trying to keep everything running.
Near the back of the tray sat a heavy rock between two hands reaching up through the sand. As I looked at that part of the tray, all I could see was someone trying not to sink. The weight of my responsibilities had become heavier than I realized, and part of me was quietly longing for help.
In front of the fence was my family. I realized how badly I wanted to wrap them in love and protect them from life's hardships. Nestled among them was a small "worried" card with a blue key. They reminded me of my son and how much I hope to find the key to his heart as he works through his struggles.
I noticed that the area representing self-care was surrounded by pairs of eyes. Then it clicked. Maybe my struggle with self-care wasn't just about finding the time. Maybe it was also about fearing what others might think if I did.
When I finished, nothing in my circumstances had changed. My responsibilities were still there. My family still needed me. Tomorrow's to-do list hadn't disappeared.
What changed was the way I saw it all.
Maybe taking care of myself wasn't taking away from the people I love after all. Maybe it was one more way of loving them.
I came expecting to arrange miniatures in sand.
I left having arranged some of the thoughts that were scattered in my mind.
Her journey toward self-care began the moment she walked into the Sandroom.
The rest was etched in sand.
